So, you’ve received the verdict. You are prediabetic, so now what? Well first off, you’re not alone. In fact, over 86 million people in the United States have prediabetes and that number is continually rising alongside the rate of obesity. With prediabetes, people are in this state of limbo where their blood sugar levels are too high to be considered “normal” or safe, but not high enough to be considered diabetic. The good news is, you can do something about this to halt the progression of diabetes.
Since the symptoms for prediabetes are usually nonexistent, many people are going undiagnosed. It’s important to get tested by your doctor if you believe you are at risk. If caught, the progression of diabetes can be slowed down or even stopped.
To prevent or slow down the progression of diabetes you can start by exercising regularly. If this seems challenging to you, start small by taking a ten minute walk around the block or taking the stairs instead of the elevator each day. Once you conquer the small stuff, you will find yourself having more energy to increase your exercise regimen. For instance, instead of watching television each night, hop on an exercise bike, elliptical or treadmill and watch your show while moving! You will be surprised how fast time flies when you have a simple distraction to help motivate you.
Another way to help slow down the progression of diabetes is eating a healthy diet. Good nutrition is so important and cannot be ignored. There are tons of support groups to help you stay motivated to eat healthy, and tons of apps that can help you track your food intake for the day. The free app called Lose It! allows you to enter in your current weight and goal weight. From there, the app will calculate a projected day that you will reach your goal and give you a healthy calorie intake for each day that you must stick to. The app helps your track each food item you consume each day. It also gives you tips to help you stick to your healthy lifestyle and allows you to enter in your exercise for the day. There are many other free apps available that also help you manage your diet.
So now that you have been diagnosed with prediabetes it is time to act for the sake of your health. Exercising regularly is nothing if you are not consuming a health diet and consuming a healthy diet is nothing without regular exercise. You will need both to live a long healthy life. You can do it!
