2017 PAH Comprehensive Care Center Update

posted from: http://pulmonaryhypertensionrn.com/ph-doctors-centers/2017-pah-comprehensive-care-center-update/

CCCs for PAHSince 2014 the Pulmonary Hypertension Association has been working to provide a more useful directory of PAH experts. Prior to this time physicians were listed by request but were not vetted in any way. They simply filled out a survey and were on the site as a PAH expert. This system worked for many years when PAH was relatively unknown and very few treatments were available. As more and more treatments became available and easier to prescribe and access, more physicians added their names to the list, many with very little experience or specialized PAH training. The list was very rarely updated and the information became out of date almost as soon as it was published.

The new system requires an extensive process of proving excellent knowledge, experience and skill at managing the care of pulmonary hypertension patients. Centers must demonstrate that they have experience with all types of treatments, offer research opportunities, have nurse coordinators dedicated to PAH, be able to care for patients in the office and hospital setting, have a multidisciplinary team and be associated with a lung transplant center. The PHA sends a visiting physician and nurse to each center to confirm all of the requirements are being met. The center applying to be a PAH Comprehensive Care Center must also pay a monetary fee.

The PHA also has plans to accredit Regional Clinical Programs. These centers will work with Comprehensive Care Centers to provide care for a larger population of PAH patients. The vetting process for RCPs requires them to be knowledgeable in managing PAH patients. The requirements are scaled back, not requiring as much office, hospital and multidisciplinary support and infrastructure as Comprehensive Care Centers. The PHA has moved back the start date for accepting applications for RCPs several times, most recently posting that they will begin the process in early 2017. Check back for an update to find out when and where the first RCP will be announced.

As of today there are 44 approved PAH Comprehensive Care Centers in 27 states. We have included a list of current centers below.
